Overview
Canvas courses are set up by term (Fall, Spring, Summer) with dates for when the term begins and ends. Students who need to finish incompletes will be unable to access the course unless special dates are added for that student. This article explains how to set this up in Canvas.
Instructions
You will need to create a new section in your course with special dates for the student with the incomplete. Then, you will need to add the student to the section. All student work will be retained in the course, so do not worry about a loss of data on the student. Here's how to do this:
- Start by going to Settings page for the Canvas course. Click the Sections tab (next to Course Details).
- You will create a new section for the student(s) with the incomplete. Type a name for the new section in the box and click the blue +Section button.
- The new section will appear in the list of Course Sections. Click the name of the new section.
- Click the Edit Section button on the right.
- Enter the Starts and Ends date for the student. (We recommend an end date that's a couple of weeks after the incomplete work must be finished to give you a buffer.)
- Click the checkbox next to Students can only participate in the course between these dates and click Update Section.
- You now need to add the student to the section. Click on People in the course menu.
- Locate the student and click the three dots () to the far right of their name. Select Edit Sections.
- Click the browse link and select the incomplete section that you've created. Remove the original section by clicking the X in the box. Click Update.
Don't forget to set new due dates for the student if needed.
