Overview
Students can paste Google Docs, Sheets, and Drive links into Canvas discussions using the Share button in Google and changing the sharing setting from restricted to anybody with the link.
Instructions
Navigate to the Google Doc, Sheet, etc., and press the Share button

Step 2: Change from Restricted to Anybody with the link
Step 3: Press the Done button

Step 4: Select Copy Link
Optional: if you want the people who have access to be allowed to make comments or edit the document change from Viewer to either Commenter or Editor
Step 5: Press the blue Done button to close the sharing window.

Step 6: Navigate to the Discussion Post and Add an external link or paste the link directly into the text box. and add any additional content per the instructions
Step 7: When you are finished Press the Post Reply button
