Overview
Okta is AU's new Identity and Access Management system that will make it easier, faster, and provide more secure ways to log in to the multiple applications we all use on a daily basis. This method is commonly called single sign-on (SSO). As the name suggests, it provides a method and process for all of you to sign in and have access to all of the applications you use in a very handy, easy-to-use dashboard. Okta secures our accounts by requiring Multi-Factor Authentication. MFA is a method of authentication where the user is asked to provide two independent credentials in order to verify the user’s identity. This article will walk you through the steps of creating your Okta account and setting up your factors for MFA.
Instructions
BEFORE YOUR START: We recommend setting up your account using a computer and downloading the Okta Verify app on your phone (available for
Android and
iOS).
Once you start the process, make sure you complete it! Starting the process switches your AU email authentication to Okta, so you can be locked out of your email if you don't complete the setup process.
- In a browser on your computer, go to https://anderson.okta.com/
- Enter your AU username and password. (This is the same username and password you use to log in to AccessAU, Canvas, etc.) Click the Sign In button.
- You will need to set up your first factor for multifactor authentication (MFA), which is called Okta Verify. This is an app that will be installed on your mobile device. If you do not have a mobile device, please notify ITS by submitting a Raven Solutions request and someone will provide you with alternative instructions.
- Click the Configure factor button.
- Select your device type that you will be using. A link to detailed instructions for your device will appear. You can refer to the link if our shortened instructions don't provide enough information. Click the Next button. A personal QR code will display in your browser.
- On your mobile device:
- Go to the app store and search for Okta Verify by Okta, Inc. Download the app to your mobile device.
- Open the Okta Verify app and tap the + (plus sign) to add a new account.
- Tap Organization for your account type.
- Tap Yes, Ready to Scan to capture your QR code.
- Point your mobile device camera at the QR code displayed on your computer screen. It will automatically capture the QR code and link your mobile device to your Okta account. IMPORTANT: Do not use anyone else's QR code or let anyone use your QR code. This will link the wrong accounts to devices.
- Tap the Done button.
- Back in your computer browser, you will now be able to set up additional factors for MFA if you'd like. The more factors you set up, the more factors you will be able to use when logging into your AU accounts.
- Once you are finished adding factors, click the Finish button.
- MyAU powered by Okta allows for self-service password resets. In order to use this option, you will need to set up at least one recovery option:
- Enter a secondary email (not your AU email) to have the password resets email sent to you.
- Enter a cell phone number to have the password reset text messages sent to you.
- Click a picture to choose a security image. This image will appear when you log in to MyAU powered by Okta to provide your reassurance that you are logging into the actual Okta website.
- Finally, click the Create My Account button.
