Keeping Your AU Account Safe with a Strong Password

How to Create Strong Passwords

A strong password is your first and best line of defense when trying to keep your AU account safe. The following tips will help create a password that is difficult for someone to guess:

  • Avoid using dictionary words and common phrases.
  • Avoid using personal information such as names, birthdays, and pet names.
  • Avoid using the same password for multiple accounts. If someone discovers your password for one account, all of your other accounts will be vulnerable.
  • Length beats complexity. Thinking of it as a passphrase may help you come up with something more memorable.

Protecting Your Password

Once you've created your password, make sure you follow these tips to protect your password:

  • Don't write passwords on a piece of paper or sticky note.
  • Don't keep a file on your computer listing the current password for your accounts.
  • Don't talk about a password in front of others, including family.
  • Don't reveal a password over the phone to ANYONE.
  • Don't reveal a password in an e-mail message.
  • Don't reveal a password on questionnaires or security forms.
  • Don’t use the "Remember Password" feature of applications.

What If I Suspect Someone Knows My Password?

Are you getting notifications that you've tried to log in to your account from a place you've never visited? It could be that someone has figured out your password. If you suspect someone knows your password, you should change it immediately!
