Help! I'm Worried About Technology for Online Classes

When you signed up for classes this semester, none of us knew that we were going to have to move classes online temporarily. We understand that some students may be worried about having the technology needed to complete course work online. Below are some suggestions for common issues. If you have any questions, please complete this Raven Solutions request so that we can help.

What if I don't have a computer?

Our hope is that all students have access to a computer, but we realize that some of you may rely on the computers in the computer labs on campus. Here are a few suggestions if you don't have a computer:

  • If you have a smartphone or tablet, you can download the Canvas Student app. This will allow you to access course materials and participate in your course. Canvas provides more information on the Student Mobile app here.
  • Check with family and friends to see if someone has a computer that you can use while classes are online. You may even check to see if your local church is able to help you.
  • Public libraries are also a place where you may be able to use a computer. (Make sure you follow local quarantine rules.)

Make sure you communicate with your instructor if consistent access to a computer is going to be a problem. Your instructor should be willing to make adjustments for you, but they need to know what is going on. Don't delay in contacting them! The sooner, the better.

What if I don't have a reliable Internet connection?

We realize that some of you may not have a reliable Internet connection. Despite the widespread coverage of the Internet, we know that the Internet may not be available or affordable in rural areas. The best suggestion we have is to do as much work as you can offline. Copy assignment instructions and download files for all your classes when you are able to get online. Then you can complete the work and limit the amount of time that you'll have to actually be connected online.  Here are a few more suggestions if you don't have a reliable Internet connection:

  • As we mentioned above, check with family and friends to see if you might be able to use their Internet connection. Again, your local church may be willing to give you access to their WiFi. It doesn't hurt to ask.
  • Public libraries may have WiFi access. (Make sure you follow local quarantine rules.)
  • Comcast is offering free WiFi during the COVID-19 outbreak.  There is no contract, but you do need to apply to receive the service. You can apply for the Comcast Internet Essentials Plan Here

As we mentioned above, make sure you communicate with your instructor if consistent access to a computer is going to be a problem. Your instructor should be willing to make adjustments for you, but they need to know. Don't delay in contacting them! The sooner, the better.
